Sustainable Design

At BPTW, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do.

BPTW is responding to the climate emergency with award-winning, highly sustainable schemes that prioritise positive environmental, social and economic outcomes. Led by our dedicated Sustainability Group and Certified Passivhaus Designers, we harness fabric-first approaches, fossil-fuel-free energy, and circular economy principles in our designs while advocating for industry wide adoption of regenerative practice.

Beyond building performance, as designers we also recognise our responsibility to address socio-economic challenges and inequalities and aim to create highly sustainable schemes that support and enhance the long term health and wellbeing of communities through successful placemaking. Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do.

Sustainability-centred approach

Our sustainable design approach starts in RIBA stage 0 by planning a deliverable road map towards a carbon-neutral development in conversation with clients and stakeholders, helping us achieve climate-resilient architecture to LETI Net-Zero Carbon, Passivhaus, and BREEAM standards. Our ‘fabric-first’ design approach locks in the performance benefits of new homes, futureproofing them against legislative change and minimising reliance on complex solutions to meet environmental targets, bringing numerous benefits for clients and residents alike.

Industry-accredited expertise

Our Sustainability Group and Passivhaus Certified Designers spearhead the development of our projects and internal practices to exceed current and emerging energy regulations. As Passivhaus Trust members and signatories of Architects Declare, we recognise our responsibility to address the climate crisis by championing sustainable design within our industry through networks such as The Housing Forum and Future of London. We take an active role in leading capacity-building workshops with residents and stakeholders’ so everyone can contribute to the process of designing sustainably.

Climate resilient design

We have designed award-winning Passivhaus and low-carbon schemes recognised for their contribution to tackling the climate crisis for a spectrum of clients and budgets, including local authorities, housing associations, housebuilders, and private developers. Our projects are industry-recognised for improving community wellbeing with accessible public spaces, active travel promotion, eco-led landscape design with bio-diversity enhancements and urban greening, creating resilient, sustainable neighbourhoods people love now and into the future.
