BPTW’s Travelodge scheme at Rochester Riverside in Medway has been shortlisted in the 2021 Brick Awards in the commercial category.

The Travelodge Rochester is an 81-bed hotel designed within the first phase of the 1400-home regeneration scheme for Countryside and Hyde. Located on Station Square marking the entrance to Rochester Riverside from the train station and town centre, the landmark building celebrates centuries of using brick in Rochester, while offering a contemporary take on how this highly versatile material can be used in a 21st century development.

It comprises four-storeys, with its massing split into two volumes – each denoted by two different brick colours. The main façade towards Station Square features dark brick (Michelmersh Brick), offering a strong frontage to the public face of the building and clearly denoting the hotel entrance. The remainder of the building along Urban Avenue comprises grey brick (Michelmersh Brick and ABC Klinkergruppe), tapping into the material palette of the surrounding homes to provide a subtle backdrop to the more domestic scale and style of the surrounding neighbourhood.

Winners will be announced at the annual Brick Awards ceremony in London on 10th November.
