We are very pleased to announce that our scheme, Bessborough Road, was unanimously approved at planning committee earlier this week. The specialist housing scheme for Wandsworth Borough Council consists of eight one-bed homes for residents with learning disabilities.

BPTW developed the design with Wandsworth Borough Council’s specialist occupational therapist and Adult Social Service Commissioning teams to create inclusive, comfortable homes. The new homes are fully adaptable to accommodate the largest variation in needs, and the ground-floor apartments are wheelchair accessible. Every home is oversized to provide a flexible space for guests. The scheme includes an onsite caretaker’s flat for residents to visit and spend time in its larger communal space. External amenity includes a sensory garden that caters to residents’ needs and a refurbished playground for the neighbourhood’s less-able children to use.

The character of Bessborough Road takes inspiration from the adjacent apartment buildings influenced by early post-war Scandinavian social housing. The scheme has also been designed with high sustainability aspirations, aiming to achieve Passivhaus Low Energy by incorporating brise-soleil, louvres and MVHR systems to mitigate overheating. A biodiverse roof and PV Panels improve the building’s energy efficiency.

Bessborough Road is part of a package of four sites assessed by BPTW for Wandsworth Borough Council, which also includes 30 affordable homes designed to Passivhaus Classic Standard at Farnborough House. We look forward to construction starting on site in early 2024.
