Magna, Cambridge

Client: Hill

Magna has been developed as a joint venture between Hill and Homerton College. The project forms part of a larger mixed use scheme comprising of new teaching facilities and student accommodation, as well as 95 new residential dwellings. These units are a mix of high quality apartments and luxury family houses arranged around attractive landscaped gardens. Located at a significant point along Cambridge’s main railway line, Magna is the first in a series of developments forming an extended gateway into Cambridge. bptw partnership worked closely with Cambridge Council’s planning department to develop a high quality design that reflects the surrounding context of the site. The buildings’ exteriors were designed as a consistent envelope with a minimal palette of materials, not differentiating between the varying tenures, and a traditional red brick with chalk mortar echoes the aesthetic of nearby Homerton College.

Magna was commended in the Cambridge Design and Construction Awards 2017, and has been shortlisted in the RICS East Region Awards 2018 and in the RIBA East Awards 2018.
