Elmington

The Elmington development is a celebrated scheme providing mixed tenure affordable housing in south London. bptw partnership worked collaboratively with Pollard Thomas Edward architects as joint masterplanners prior to designing and implementing this phase of the development. The scheme has become an exemplar of sustainable design.

The masterplan for Elmington has mended the urban fabric of the local area, redefining the Victorian street pattern and providing safe, landscaped public spaces, pedestrian thoroughfares and cycling routes through the neighbourhood.

bptw partnership coordinated an extensive community consultation programme to determine the aspirations and needs of local residents and the community.

Elmington features two-storey mono-pitched and duo-pitched houses arranged in terrace formation with courtyards and gardens. Defined pedestrian thoroughfares are marked by medium-rise gateway apartment buildings. Quality design finishes and robust materials including brick, glazed tiles and timber cladding are used throughout the scheme, and paved landscaping and amenity fixtures including cycle racks, benches and lighting enhance the public spaces surrounding the residential buildings.

Elmington has achieved a Building for Life Silver Standard from CABE and was the winner of the Best Public Housing Development at the Brick Awards in 2004.
