Gossett Street, Bethnal Green
bptw planning were successful in securing permission for this challenging residential scheme on a site in Bethnal Green previously occupied by businesses. With the site bordering a conservation area comprising predominantly of two storey houses and a local park, the application received considerable objection from the conservation area residents association due to its scale and density, and the council planners initially sought to resist the application on the basis of the loss of future employment use.
Working with local commercial agents, bptw were able to build a strong land use case in support of residential use, demonstrating that there would be no significant employment impact through redevelopment. We were also successful in building a case around the limited impact to the adjoining conservation area, subsequently convincing the local planning authority that there should be no legal or planning impediment to the grant of planning permission. The scheme comprising 51 high quality new build apartments and town houses went on to win a Housing Design Award in 2009.
