Last Friday Labour politician Chuka Umunna undertook a site visit to bptw’s project at Thrale Almshouses, Streatham. The Shadow Business Secretary, who is also the MP for Streatham, was briefed on the project and shown round the site by Partner Andy Heath and key members of the project team.
The unique housing scheme for Thrale Almshouses and Relief in Need Charity is being built specifically for women aged over 60yrs and involves the sensitive refurbishment and extension of eight existing locally listed 1 bed Almshouses and 9 spacious new build 1 and 2 bed flats including wheelchair dwellings. A secure landscaped internal courtyard will caters to residents’ needs, providing a sensory space with potential for small raised allotment areas.
A simple approach to circulation and shared views of the garden to all flats creates a sense of community and encourages interaction. All homes within the development are designed to Lifetime Homes standards and have a southerly aspect, maximising daylight into living spaces.
The project which was shortlisted in the Housing Design Awards last year is due for completion at the end of March.
