Thrale Almshouses, South London

Client: Thrale Almshouses & Relief in Need Charity

Thrale is a unique over 60s housing scheme located on Polworth Road, Streatham, involving the sensitive refurbishment and extension of 8 locally listed 1 bed Almshouses. The scheme also includes 9 new build spacious flats in a mix of 1 and 2 bedroom units, including wheelchair dwellings.

Homes within the development are reserved for women and are built around a secure landscaped courtyard catering specifically for the user group. This area creates a soft and tactile setting for a stimulating sensory environment, with allotment style raised planting bed areas for residents to plant their own vegetables or flowers. The layout retains a sense of community through a simple approach to circulation and shared views of the garden to all flats. All homes within the development are designed to Lifetime Homes standards and have a southerly aspect, maximising sunlight to individual units. The scheme was shortlisted in the Housing Design Awards 2014 and 2015, the NLA Awards 2015, and the London Planning Awards 2016.

Thrale Almshouses was featured as an exemplar project in Historic England's publication on Translating Good Growth for London's Historic Environment. To view the article, please see here.
