Sunfields Church, South East London

bptw’s designs for the Sunfields Methodist Church in Blackheath have created a new prominent landmark building and a central venue for worship and events for the local Methodist community. Laid out in cruciform, the church is defined by a large west facing stained glass window, created using elaborately etched and coloured glazing. The window comes to life at night where the intricate detailing positively radiates with colour and, in sunlight, the colours play delicately on the internal high quality masonry surfaces.

In keeping with the traditional design of church buildings, the integration of the roof structure and lighting are key features of the building which allow daylight to spill through the church, creating a well lit, relaxed environment to worship in. High quality materials utilised on the project include glulam timber, brick and stone features and a slate tiled roof. Within the building additional rooms are provided for community use, along with a kitchen, office space, WC’s and storage.
