Ordsall Estate, Manchester

bptw’s masterplan for the redevelopment of a large housing estate near the Old Trafford football ground has provided an aspirational vision for the local community. The brief required bptw to recommend ways to regenerate the estate in line with the quality of the neighbouring, relatively affluent, Salford Quays. Following consultation with residents through an extensive engagement programme, bptw identified numerous problems with the existing estate. Following an examination of the site within the context of the wider local area, the final framework plan expressed the project as a balanced range of all these considerations. Specifically, it suggested new routes through the estate, along with traffic calming measures, improvements to local facilities (including new open spaces), and new gateways to improve access to the estate.

The masterplan has been adopted by the Local Authority and is being used as a local development brief to facilitate discussions and commercial negotiations with developers in relation to taking forward identified sites and opportunities in the area.
